Mulch - Nothing More Discouraging to Weeds

Everyone knows or practically everyone knows, that fall is the ideal time to get the lawn in shape for the winter. We gave ours an early feeding with fertilizer, and seeded some of the spots that had suffered during the summer. Black dirt was lightly sprinkled over the new seed, and it is surprising what a quick start and vigorous growth it made.

I don't think our lawn has ever gone through the winter in better shape, and SOON it will get another light feeding. In spite of everything, there always seem to be a few spots that show up bare this time of year. I have to walk out over the lawn to find them, but they are there. Runners will fill many of these spots during the coming weeks, but I like to give them an assist.

Good seed is too expensive to waste. It doesn't pay to sow anything but GOOD seed. Weeds will fill up the bare spots, without your sowing them. So, almost any time now, I'll go over the lawn with a bucket of seed and a bucket of black dirt. (If you don't have good weed-free black dirt you had better use peat moss, milled spagnum moss, or you can use vermiculite) .

In each bare spot I'll scatter a pinch of seed, and cover it lightly with the mulch. Unless the ground is pretty wet, I'll sprinkle this down with the hose. Likewise unless we get a shower now and then (and it isn't too late to get some snow here) I'll give it an occasional sprinkling.

Just remember that blue grass likes cool moist weather. It won't germinate until the ground warms up. If your seed is just on the surface, remember that the ground dries out on top pretty quick. So no germination. Or if it has germinated, and the ground gets dry, the roots will very likely die before they get a foothold. So you can readily see the advantage of the mulch to help hold the moisture until the seed is able to take care of itself.

As you undoubtedly have guessed by now, I'm pretty happy just grass happy with our front yard. This is the side our friends and neighbors see. Actually I see more of the back yard. No one has ever heard me brag about that. There is a pretty large area just in grass, and we like the unbroken expanse.

Our back yard has all the customary pasture weeds, plus the crab grass. Fertilizing and spraying has helped, but still the area is not of what you might call bragging" quality.

So this year I am going to use some of the weed seed killers that are put on in dry form right along with the fertilizer. And I am going to use some extra feedings. Yes, I know that means more mowing, but that is what mowers are made for, so why not use them. Especially when you can ride. I always did like that feature.

But I really have another reason" in fact a pair of reasons. In the first place, nothing will crowd out and smother weeds like vigorously growing grass. But I will also mulch the garden. Oh yes, I know some of the experts say don't use grass cuttings for a mulch. But I shall ignorantly go on doing it. The flowers, shrubs and trees, it seems, never heard of this and like me, they are too ignorant to know better than to like it.

There are just two things to do. First, stack it up and let it go through the heating process until it has dried out or cured. Second, it does take extra nitrogen on account of the bacterial action in decomposing. So I either put on straight nitrogen or use a complete fertilizer if I think that is needed.

Nothing is more discouraging to weeds than to try to grow up through a heavy mulch. Putting down mulch certainly helps hold the moisture in. Maybe this will be another year of good rainfall.

When I was a youngster a frequently used expression - and maybe it is still used, was Zip, I caught a yellow jacket, Zip, I let him go again.

And so I did. The other afternoon I was walking through the back yard, when I became conscious of something on my left forefinger. I instinctively closed my thumb and started to roll it between thumb and finger. Something told me Id better look at what I had. It just happened to be a yellow jacket. Did I ever shake him loose quick like?!

It was warm enough for him to be out, but still cold enough that he was just a bit too slow on the backward push.

If we took each of those shelves and moved them up, it could make space for an extra shelf somewhere in the arrangement, which could allow us to store even more items within the cabinet instead of shoving them elsewhere.

If you notice in many homes, walls are bare or just have few art work dcor on them. When you are in the kitchen and you notice your cabinet space is limited but walls are bare, hang your pots and pans there. That will leave space in the cabinets which you need and also give you easy access to your cooking pans.

Area rugs are always a plus in many homes. Many owners will purchase a few and change them every so often for a great new look but where do you store them afterwards? Well there are a few easy places where you can place them. Either roll them up and place them in a closet or under the bed. Another great spot is in the garage which holds everything else. Designate a space just for the rugs in a corner. It won't take up much room and they are easy to access when it's time to switch them.

Finally, if we begin to keep frequently used items near the space where we use them most often, our space will be much less cluttered and a lot more organized. This will help us to not have to move all over our living space to find the things that we need and it will keep us from leaving it laying out. This can help us to make the best of the limited space we are given.

Unless they have a nice place to sit and eat at the counter, in which you could always just buy some nice stools and turn that area into a bit of a breakfast nook. Again you can add some color and comfort by placing a nice area rug in the middle of the floor.

Kitchens will need a few things but really as far as dishes are concerned you can get just a few for now. Don't buy a set of eight if you can't afford it go and buy those specials of one or two plates you can get separately. For this room a table and chairs is needed more than anything else. Without a place to sit and eat you will find that you and your family will sit in front of the TV too much. Provide a way to sit and relax every day with a nice table and chairs.

One of the best areas in your house to bring out most of your personality is the living room. You can get that furniture that you've always wanted or something simple for now. Adding a nice looking area rug can add so much to a room. If you have a smaller room depending on the color you pick it can actually make the room feel bigger. This may also be where you will place a computer or bookcase too. Match the furniture as well as you can to get your own taste in the living room.

Overall you should remember that if you don't have the money to do your whole apartment at one time take it a room at a time. Most likely you should at least get a bed first. But as you can afford it add more to each room.

TIP #4: Be a Beginner and Be an Expert

Don't be cocky with your skill level. Keep an open mind to learning whether it be beginner or advanced. Stand fast as you never know when lessons will present themselves.

Tip #5: Dream BIG

Make short span goals that build to your long term goal. You will feel more accomplished which will help you work harder to reach the big one! Refer to earlier tip #2... Reach as high as possible and you will surprise yourself everytime.

When you were younger did you wonder what you would grow up to be? Was it a fireman or president of the United States? Reacquaint yourself with that kid you use to be and dream those ideas.

Ask yourself, what are your dreams NOW...because you must have those dreams to bring them into reality. And you can. And you will.

The Pests of Azaleas and Camellias

Starting caladiums in the South during March is not a good idea. We do not attempt to start our main crop of fancy leaved caladiums until the weather gets fairly warm; however, it is possible to start a few in a sunny window this month. If planted too early and if the weather remains cool, the bulbs may rot. A safe method of handling is to start the bulbs in a well-drained bed in a sunny spot.

Place the bulbs on a 2-inch layer of a sand-peat mixture and cover with an inch layer of the same mixture. When two or three leaves have developed, lift the bulbs with all the soil that clings to the roots and set them in their permanent places in the garden. If you are growing a mixture of bulbs this method will enable you to determine the colors and make pleasing combinations before setting them in their permanent beds.

A half-and-half mixture of garden loam and leafmold or peatmoss makes a fine soil for a garden bed of caladiums; we always place a handful of sand under each plant to improve the drainage. Caladiums, which are available as named varieties, are among our best plants for summer color. They are well suited to shady spots where many other plants will not thrive.

Cleaning my pools - Almost every spring I wait too long before cleaning my pools, and when I finally do get around to them there are scads of baby goldfish on hand to greet me. If you have a pool, let me urge you to clean it right away as goldfish and other aquatic animal life start breeding with the first suggestions of spring, and a late cleaning will materially disturb their young.

Early care for roses - If a stitch in time saves nine in the ordinary run of events, it saves about ninety-nine in the care of roses. The easiest way, by far, to keep black spot under control is to start your dusting or spraying schedule in March when the new growth is only a few inches long. Also remove and destroy all debris such as pruned canes, old leaves and faded blooms, for they harbor disease.

Pests of azaleas and camellias - The only insect that gives any great amount of trouble with azaleas is the lacebug; and the same can be said of scale on camellias. Each shrub just like caladium bulbs should be sprayed with an oil base material or malathion preparations as soon as it is finished blooming. Malathion is especially effective at this time and not during planting season when young insects are present in great numbers.

Questions of the Month

Q. When is the best time to divide and rest my lycoris bulbs? Also, when is the best time to purchase new stock?

A. Most of the lycoris species are green and growing during the winter months and should not be disturbed until the foliage has matured and turned yellow, usually about May. The best time to buy new stock is from May through June, as the roots start growing again in late summer.

Q. My amaryllis have formed large clumps and seem to need dividing. When should this be done?

A. You may divide and rest them immediately after they have finished blooming, but late fall is probably a better time. Be sure to replant immediately so that the roots will not dry out.

Q. I know that we cannot grow peonies very successfully in the Deep South, but are there any particular varieties or types that will thrive farther South than others?

A. Two factors seem to militate against growing good peonies down here. The winters are too mild and too short; and the hot sun in late spring blasts the buds before they can open. The very early varieties and those that produce single or semi-double flowers are likely to do the best.

Q. Is it necessary to hand-pollinate amaryllis to get them to bear seeds?

A. As a rule it is. A few may set seeds from self or insect-pollination but not many. Most gardeners wish to produce seeds only from their choice varieties and this can be done only by hand-pollination.

Lily Turf - Another Name For Liriope

Try to keep a list of garden jobs on a card to do during March, and hang it where you don't lose it so you'll be sure to get the jobs done when time and weather permits in the East.

The bed south of our sun porch is a problem; it is in the heavy shade of a shellbark hickory, also shaded by a huge honeysuckle. It is not only shaded, but it's dry. I find that even with watering it is rather hard to keep primroses alive in this spot so I am going to use it as a place to try out some of the named varieties of lily turf that I got last fall. I have 'Majestic,' 'Lilac Beauty,' 'Monroi White,' and Silver Ribbon. These are all varieties of liriope. They can take shade, rather dry growing conditions, and also the birds. The planting is just under the hanging bird feeder and the birds, especially sparrows, going after the food they throw out, are rough on tender plants like primroses.

The last of this month is usually, mild enough in Ohio to take the shading off my cold frames so the sun can start warming them up. If you live very much north of Columbus or St; Louis you have to put this off. By the last of February the roses should be blooming in my front yard as well as in a lot of other places around the grounds. The Christmas rose seed that I sowed in the cold frame last November should be starting to germinate.

Taking Pictures

Digital pictures are a good means of checking on your garden, both to see how it grows and changes from year to year as well as to show up places that need attention. To be honest I design and plant my place with pictures in mind. I have decided that next year I would like to have a nice shot down along a path, or across a certain part of the yard.

Consequently I make all of my plantings with this in mind. For instance last fall I had a lot of seedling cardinal flowers coming up in the cold frames and growing beds and I massed a bunch of them in front of the arborvitae hedge back of the pool. That should give me a gorgeous shot next July.

And in a couple of other places around the yard I put in a number of foxglove seedlings. That will give me a nice picture in June. Early last fall I planted all of one side of the path beside the garage with primroses. I have never taken a picture of that part of my yard because I was never proud of it. I hope next spring I will be.

One resolution I made last year, but am having a hard struggle to keep, is never to use a pencil on any plant labels. A Sharpie pen with a fine point is easy to read and will be as permanent as the label itself. Unless you are a memory specialist like Dale Carnegie you are going to find it necessary to label each and every plant including patio ground cover, cutting, seed, and what have you, as soon as you plant it. All too few of us have the time to make a record in our notebooks of each patio ground cover as we plant it" its name, where it came from, where it was planted.

Try making a plot of your yard and giving each bed a number or letter. Then you can have on a separate sheet an enlarged plan of this bed. Once you get this done it doesn't take too long to jot down a planting plan.
